Sew A Little Kindness 2025

Welcome!

If you’re here from scanning a QR code, you might already have some idea of what October 11th will be all about. If not, welcome! I am a sewist – creating clothing, household items and quilts. Getting together and sewing with my quilt guild friends ranks up there as one of my favorite pastimes. I always have a good time, even if I don’t get much done. Ahem.

A few years ago, I rented out the local township building and invited all of my best girlfriends to come up to my little rural town and sew with me. Think sleepover meets dance party meets cooking class. Its not uncommon at one of my sew days to sample biscuits slathered in butter and honey, fresh from the oven. Or see me break into a Soul Train routine, doing a bad imitation of The Hustle. (The playlists tend to be oldies, because they invoke the most laughter and also offend the least number of listeners.) I planned two sew days, but it has been a few years. The itch to do it all again started in May of this year, but I wanted to shake things up a little bit. My friends always wanted to help cover the cost of the rental fees or food, but I refused. This time, I am hoping you will bring something else: quilt blocks!

My first Quilts For Survivors quilt and recipient, Zephiriah Joseh.

I am always ready to make a quilt for a great cause. I belong to a Facebook group, Quilts For Survivors. We make quilts for the survivors of residential schools and other traumatic events. Most, if not all, of the recipients are Native American or First Nation. I feel strongly about this worthy cause and encourage you to check them out. The other cause I am currently supporting is Quilts of Valor. Both of my sisters and one brother-in-law are retired National Guard and my son is a Marine. I’ve seen first-hand the impact of their service, so I fully support veterans and their needs.

Along with sewing your little hearts out, I am offering you lunch, snacks, drinks, fresh brookies (the love child of cookies and brownies). All I ask is that you bring me a pair of blocks. Three, if you count the spare HSTs. I have made them FQ-friendly, so for $6(?) you can make 2 giant flying geese and 4 Half-Square Triangles to contribute to your choice of charity quilts: either Quilts For Survivors OR Quilts of Valor. That’s it.

Here are the details and a link to the tutorial for the blocks. IF you are a new sewist, or you aren’t sure you can master those blocks – THAT’S OKAY. Instead I ask is that you bring a non-perishable food item for the Slippery Rock Food Pantry. This sew day is really about sending a little kindness out into the world. SO… Pack your machines, your projects, your comfy seat cushions 😉 and your blocks. I’ll see you in Slippery Rock at 9am on October 11, 2025.

*I will have 2 large cutting stations and 2 ironing stations. No need to bring a full size iron, but you are welcome to bring your own cutting mats for your 8′ table. The room is large enough to layout quilts for basting, along with a small kitchenette for dietary needs Bathrooms are accessible and the loading area is covered, in case of inclement weather. Consider ear buds or plugs if you wish to listen to other music, etc. If you have any special snacks you want to bring, feel free. Coffee, tea, iced tea and lemonade will be available all day with a variety of sweeteners, creamers, etc. If you have any questions, drop them in the comments below. See you then!
