    Spring Violets Quilt

    My third #dogoodstitchesabide quilt There’s a perfect moment in the spring. It’s usually after a good soaking rain. The flowers all bloom at the same time. Each home sits in their own little jewel-box of a yard, on a bed of grass so lush and green that it looks like velvet. It’s fleeting, because within days the dandelions pop up and the grass grows a smidge too long. Most people will pull out their lawnmowers at this point, but I will bargain and cajole my husband to hold off because the wood violets appear and I love them.     Hello, there. It’s been awhile.

    Well, the world certainly looks differently than it did back in 2016 when we last posted on this blog. The faces aren’t the same – some have grown and moved on. Others are a little softer, a little grayer than before. Some we had to bid goodbye. We embarked on several large, long term projects back then and are just now beginning to see the end of the tunnel on a few of them. Eighteen months and 1800 quilts later, the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild’s initiative far surpassed anything that we could have imagined. I have the privilege of being friends with Alissa Lapinsky, the president of the OMQG at the time. She stored and sorted quilts for months from her small home, all while working a full-time job and trying to maintain some kind of normalcy in a community that was reeling.     Artichoke Fava Bean and Asparagus Stew

    I know we are more than halfway through winter, but I suspect this Pantry Challenge that limits my purchases of fresh vegetables and the snow that keeps falling are giving me the munchies for spring.  I am thinking of tender baby peas, crisp young asparagus, M&M’s….wait, scratch that last one.  Focus, right?  I wrote earlier about the Rhinebeck Country Living Fair last June.  I met Brent and Josh, the Beekman Boys.  I fell hard for their Heirloom Vegetable Cookbook.  Very hard.  I searched for baby artichokes for over 6 months so that I could make their Artichoke Fava Bean and Asparagus Stew.  Last November, the stars aligned and I finally…

    Scranton St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2014

    Let’s hear it for the Scranton St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2014!!!  It’s a family tradition on my husband’s side and I was able to finally make it.  It is an over-the-top expression of pride and love for Eire.  Everyone wore green, decorated their dogs and waved to attract the attention of the floats that were throwing shirts, beads, candy and other goodies.  Vendors hawked green cotton candy, emerald feather boas, horns that sounded like bull elk calling to each other when blown and hot pretzels.  Churches had tables for free coffee, hot chocolate or simply a place to stand together against the cold wind.

    Apple Pie Waffles

    Easy, like Sunday morning…. Aaah, Sunday morning.  I surprised everyone by springing forth from my bed with a shout that I would be making breakfast.  Me – the one who gets nauseous from eating before noon.  And these waffles were stupendous. I started with a recipe from the Betty Crocker website for Pumpkin Waffles with Maple-Apple Syrup and proceeded to do my own thing.  Enjoy!
